On Tuesday, I attended Oura Sananikone's lunchtime lecture. He is an artist, based out of Richmond who does a lot of work with toys and drawing. His sculptural projects with toys and his 2D projects have similar styles that show how well an artist can make their work feel continuous across mediums. One thing that he talked about were his newer mural projects, something that he had just gotten into working on. I thought it was really interesting to see how he was just learning this new medium and already doing a lot of work with it. His work with murals really showed how important it is to explore new mediums or techniques because you never know what you will end up loving to do. Sananikone also talked about his commission work and the work he did for his Patreon. He talked about some of the difficulties he had with keeping up with the work and how he sometimes needed to focus on more of the style that his client wanted versus what his typical style was. One of the biggest things that came up in this talk though was the importance of finding an artistic community. Many of the events that Sananikone has taken a part of stemmed from from different communities he was a part of, which highlights the importance of getting to know other artists.
