Vanessa Barragão is a textile artist living in Albufeira, Portugal. She worked with textiles while in college in Lisbon, and continued her training by working as both a textile designer in an artisanal rugs factory and designing her own textiles. She now works full time on her own textiles. Some of the techniques Vanessa Barragão uses to make her work are latch hook, crochet, felting, weaving, embroidery, and macrame. Her work is inspired by the environment. One of her especially big inspirations is coral because of the beautiful colors. The shapes and colors of coral and other natural things can be seen in her work, but another aspect of nature that is an inspiration for her is the death of natural things such as coral due to human influence. She recognizes that the textile industry is one of the most polluting industries, which is why she uses more sustainable textile practices in an effort to preserve nature. All of her yarns are up-cycled from leftovers of various textile factories in Portugal.
