On November 3rd I attended Noelani Jones's lunchtime lecture. She is a fiber artist who weaves using natural materials. She talked about how she created her own yarn to weave and dyed it using all natural dyes that she had made, but I found it most interesting to hear about her using materials other than these such as pine needles and rocks in her weavings. Another thing that I thought was interesting was how Noelani was able to combine some of her works into a larger piece to add the impact of size to it. This goes to show how pieces can be reimagined into new works. One think I was curious about was if it was difficult to change aspects of a weaving once it had been done. Noelani mentioned how impermanent weavings could be since you could take out the string if you wanted, but I wonder if the way she sets up the loom in the first place makes it difficult for her to change a design or not?
